RALEIGH, N.C. — Around the Triangle, Dorcas Ministries is synonymous with meeting needs.

Rev. Dr. Rose Cornelious is the woman that helps make it happen.

"I have a passion for marginalized people, for people who are struggling," said Cornelious, development director of Dorcas Ministries. "I have a passion for women and children around the world, especially little girls.”

Cornelious raises the money for programs and services that benefit 27,000 Triangle residents every year. One of the biggest resources is a massive thrift store filled with discounted-donated items.

"We pay for childcare," Cornelious said. "We help people with rent, utilities, tuition, medical costs all sorts of things.”

Clients say Cornelious’ work at Dorcas has changed their lives. That's a big reason that we have honored her with our Celebrating Black History Month award.

"My first time coming here, they paid my rent for like a month, which was way more than I was anticipating," said Chenet Homer, a former client.

"It’s not just paying a bill. It is also giving you more resources to hopefully better your situation," Cornelious said.

Cornelious doesn’t limit her service to North Carolina.

"I have been to about 27 countries. I have been to the nation of Haiti 8 times alone," Cornelious said.

On those mission trips, Cornelious delivers food, clean water and clothing to third world countries. Those that know her, call her true definition of a servant leader.

"She never wants to be recognized, but she’s also always deserving of it," said Veronica Bent.

"To me, she is not just the epitome of a strong black woman, she’s just a strong woman in general," Homer said. "I think any woman can look at Rose and see that she sets a good example of doing good within your community.”
