RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Roy Cooper sidestepped twice Thursday when asked whether New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who faces a pair of scandals, should resign.

Cooper told Politico, in a morning interview streamed online, that "our actions and words matter," and that Cuomo should face "a full investigation." But he wouldn't say whether Cuomo, his fellow Democratic governor, should resign.

Cooper is vice chairman of the Democratic Governor's Association, which works to elect Democrats around the country. He will chair the group in 2022.

Half a dozen women have accused Cuomo recently of sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior. His administration also apparently undercounted COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes.

Cooper also discussed his own future political aspirations, saying he won't cut his term short to seek North Carolina's U.S. Senate seat, which is opening next year with the retirement of Republican Sen. Richard Burr.

Cooper said he expects to get a call from Democratic Party recruiters for the seat, but said he's "promised the people four years as governor." He noted that North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who would move up to the governor's mansion if Cooper leaves office, is a Republican.

Cooper also said that, if he did run for the Senate, he believes he'd win.

Asked about running for vice president on a future ticket with current Vice President Kamala Harris, Cooper said he'd be interested.
