RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Roy Cooper has re-appointed two North Carolina State Board of Education members and named two new ones.

The board has had one at-large position vacancy, in addition to expiring terms of current board members.

On Thursday, Cooper appointed Melody Chalmers McClain to represent the 4th Education District, which covers the Sandhills region. That seat was most recently occupied by University of North Carolina at Pembroke professor Olivia Oxendine, who was appointed by former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory.

McClain is assistant superintendent of Cumberland County Schools. Cooper's news release announcing her appointment noted recent honors from the North Carolina African American Leaders in Education and her service on the Governor’s Commission on Access to a Sound Basic Education and the North Carolina Association of Principals and Assistant Principal Board of Directors.

Cooper appointed Ronald K. Hargrave as a new at-large board member. Hargrave, a military veteran, has served in administrative roles in the Scotland County and Iredell-Statesville school districts, including six years as the superintendent in Scotland County, the news release states.

Cooper also re-appointed Chairman Eric Davis, of Charlotte, and Vice Chairman Alan Duncan, of Greensboro. Davis is an engineer, and Duncan is an attorney. Both are former members of their local boards of education.
