SOUTHPORT, N.C. — A former teacher who was convicted on charges she had sex with a 16-year-old student while on an overnight field trip in Raleigh tried to offer sexual harassment consulting services to the Brunswick County school district.

Janet Klatt, 44, of Charlotte, founded an educational organization and registered it as a nonprofit. She offered to bolster employee training to prevent sexual harassment.

Klatt was convicted in February of sexual activity between a school personnel member and a student. She was sentenced to 30 months on probation and fined $500.

Investigators said Klatt, who taught at a private school in Concord called The Cannon School, was discovered having sex with the student at the Clarion Hotel on Hillsborough Street during the overnight trip in April 2006. She also was convicted in Cabarrus County in an incident with the same student.

Brunswick County officials said they were unaware of Klatt's background, but there was no word on whether her criminal record would disqualify her from training school staff.
