FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation has awarded a $125 million contract to build the next section of the so-called Fayetteville Outer Loop highway from south of Cliffdale Road to east of the All-American Freeway.

The contract to New Jersey-based Conti Enterprises includes building 6.7 miles of four-lane highway with interchanges at Cliffdale Road and Canopy Lane.

Work can begin as early as Sept. 29 and is scheduled to be completed by October 2018. The road is expected to open by March 2019.

The first section of the highway, also known as Interstate 295, from Interstate 95 to Ramsey Street, opened to traffic in 2005. A 1.7-mile section from Murchison Road to Bragg Boulevard opened on Aug. 4, and the sections from Murchison Road to Ramsey Street and from Bragg Boulevard to the All-American Freeway are scheduled to be complete in August 2016.
