ConAgra to hold dedication ceremony in remembrance of blast

GARNER, N.C. — A Slim Jim snack plant in Garner will hold a dedication ceremony and picnic this weekend in remembrance of a deadly blast.

Three employees were killed and nearly 40 others were injured in the June 9 explosion that caused a partial collapse of the plant.

In remembrance of those affected by the blast, a dedication ceremony and community picnic will be held Saturday at Lake Benson Park at 921 Buffaloe Road, beginning 11 a.m.

The event will feature a memorial plaque dedication, food from Carolina BBQ and Barry’s Cafe, and entertainment.

People wanting to attend are asked to make a $5 donation to the United Way ConAgra Foods Garner Plan Fund, which is helping victims with expenses. In exchange, you will receive a bracelet for admittance into Saturday's event.

You can pick up a bracelet at the following locations this week:

Michael’s at White Oak Shopping Center

  • Tuesday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Garner Road Family YMCA

  • Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Wake County Speedway

  • Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On-site bracelets will also be available the day of the event.
