PERSON COUNTY, N.C. — Over 100 people gathered Wednesday evening to remember the life of Chad Woods, killed in Person County.

The 17-year-old, also known as JR was hit and killed while walking down the road.

Friends and family describe him as an energetic ball of energy who loved everyone.

The sheriff's office says the teen's father killed the driver who hit him.

Monday at around 6:30 a.m., investigators say Jeffrey McKay struck and killed the teen with his truck on Dink Ashley Road in Timberlake.

JR and his family were walking home after their car ran out of gas.

Investigators say JR's father, Chad Woods, shot the driver dead.

He and JR's mother are accused of stealing Mckay's car to escape.

It's a double tragedy family friends are struggling to process.

"Its definitely very emotional to see someone of that character to have it taken away so soon," Outlaw said. "He never even got a chance to live."

The family is in the process of making funeral arrangements

The teen's father, Chad Woods, will appear in court on August 21.
