RALEIGH, N.C. — The community gathered Monday night to remember the life of a 12-year-old girl killed in a hit-and-run last week on Hillsborough Street.
Samantha Briggs died in the crash on Nov. 26, her sister Dakisha Holmes told WRAL News.

"She was such a sweet soul," said Holmes.

Holmes said she's torn apart over the tragic loss of her 12-year-old sister.

The driver behind the wheel is still on the run as of Monday night.

Raleigh police told WRAL News they haven’t pinpointed a suspect yet, but are still looking for a white Hyundai hybrid.

On Monday, family members and the community gathered to remember Briggs' life with a balloon release.

Samantha Briggs died in the incident on Nov. 26, her sister told WRAL News.

Briggs' family members gathered at the crash site, now turned into a memorial, pleading for the driver to come forward.

"It’s nothing I want more than to lay my sister to rest and know that the guy is taken care of," said Holmes.

Dozens poured in with pink and black balloons—two of Briggs' favorite colors; A somber mood and sense of grief filled the spot on Hillsborough Street where she was hit and killed after trying to cross the street.

"She was celebrating her birthday with a couple of friends," said Holmes.

Briggs died a day after her birthday on Thanksgiving.

This incident cuts deep for Mona Ndiaye, who said Briggs and her own 12-year-old daughter were close.

"She was just getting started in her life," said Ndiaye. "We were all together the day of her birthday and the last thing I said to her was ‘We’ll be back.' I didn’t go back and that really hurt me.”

As balloons flew high to celebrate Briggs' short life, her family remains hopeful the responsible driver will speak up.

"Just turn yourself in," said Holmes. "I don’t hate you. I don’t hate you at all, but we just want justice for her family."

The family is in the process of making funeral arrangements.
