Community gathers for fundraiser in honor of volunteer firefighter killed in ATV crash
Family, friends and complete strangers gathered for a fundraiser in Dunn on Thursday for a 17-year-old volunteer firefighter who died in March.
Posted — UpdatedOn March 30, Brock Currens, 17, was driving an ATV during a car racing event at Galot Motorsports Park and hit the brakes too abruptly. Officials said he flipped over the handrail of his ATV and later died at WakeMed as a result of traumatic brain injuries.
"He was an amazing kid," said Captain Edward Twigg of the Four Oaks Fire Department.
On Thursday, 10 percent of meals purchased at Sagebrush Steakhouse went to the family, in addition to the proceeds from a bake sale.
"He would be so proud and blown away, he would be blown away," said Rhonda Lee, Currens' mom at a previous fundraiser.
The owner of Sagebrush said she's received calls and donations from all over.
"It makes you tear up, they are doing it for a 17-year-old they don't know, " said Twigg.
The family hopes to buy some fire equipment to help a Smithfield Selma Senior High School program Currens was in.
Currens was a junior at South Johnston High School.
