RALEIGH, N.C. — The chill was back on Saturday after temperatures topped out in the 70s across central North Carolina on the final day of the work week.

"Our 24 hour temperature change is enormous," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. "Anywhere from 20 to 29 degrees colder than it was yesterday."

Temperatures around the Triangle region climbed into the mid 40s during the afternoon, but the mercury will fall through the evening and scrape the low 30s by 8 p.m. Skies will hold a mix of clouds and sun throughout the day.

Overnight, though, temps will drop even further, bottoming out at 22 degrees.

High pressure on Sunday will bring clear skies, but the cold air will stick around, as the high climbs into the mid-30s and the low drops to 17 degrees.

"The cold blast could set the stage for some wintry precipitation by the middle of the week," Gardner said.

More snow?

A front moving in from the West early next week has the potential to mix with upper-level moisture and another low pressure system late Tuesday night, which could bring some snow.

The low pressure system will begin forming off the coast early Wednesday morning, Gardner said, which could spark the flakes.

"Depending on exactly how those interact with one another, it's possible we'll have some precipitation later Tuesday night into Wednesday," Gardner said. "There's potential that could be in the form of snow or sleet."

Based on the early models it looks like the Triangle could see snow from about early Wednesday through the early evening hours.
