TechGirlz, a national group with a North Carolina chapter that works to get middle school girls interested in tech careers, will host an event in March that aims to set the world record for the number of girls coding at the same time.

Code Breakers, held in honor of Women's History Month, is set for March 30 and includes a local session here in Raleigh at NC State University. It's for girls in fifth to ninth grade.

“In Code Breakers, we hope to create a world record that can quickly be broken,” said TechGirlz CEO and founder Tracey Welson-Rossman in a news release. “There is a rising tide of girls joining programs like TechGirlz because of an interest in tech, to learn new skills with their friends, or to pursue it as a lucrative and empowering future career. It is only fitting that we recognize this sea change on the occasion of Women’s History Month.”

Events are planned across the country. In the Triangle, it's set for noon to 3 p.m., March 30, at NC State's College of Engineering, 1070 Partners Way.

NC State Computer Science Clubs will run the event. In the workshop, students will learn the elements of HTML and CSS and use them to create a website, according to the description. Using a text editor and web browser, students will edit web page templates and use them to make their own website.

Students are encouraged to bring their own device. Snacks will be provided. On the same day, the College of Engineering will be hosting an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for students who want to get there early and learn more about STEM opportunities at NC State.

The program is free, but you'll want to pre-register.

More information about Code Breakers is on the TechGirlz website.
