Coats police officer involved in crash was charged with DWI in 2020
A Coats police officer is one of two people in the hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening.
Posted — UpdatedThe officer, Conner Robert Capshaw, failed to yield at a stop sign at Cane Mill Road and Red Hill Church Road around 6 p.m., according to officials.
The driver of the other vehicle involved was also taken to the hospital. Both were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
It's unclear if Capshaw was responding to a call at the time of the crash.
Capshaw was suspended for one week without pay while town leaders further investigate the crash.
“It’s not a good situation," said Coats Town Manager Nick Holcomb. "We’re still trying to figure out where to go from this point."
Capshaw told his superiors that he swerved around a dog in the street, causing him to not see the stop sign.
"We are very sorry for the incident that took place yesterday," said Coats Mayor Chris Coats. "I know the officer is as well. We hope all parties involved will be healthy at the end of this."
