Coast Guard rescues two; boat burns, sinks

The Coast Guard rescued two people Sunday after their boat caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean about 35 miles north of Beaufort Inlet.

BEAUFORT, N.C. — The Coast Guard rescued two people Sunday after their boat caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean about 35 miles north of Beaufort Inlet.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Monday that the distress call from the 35-foot craft came in around 3 p.m. to the Fort Macon station. The people on board abandoned ship and boarded a life raft.

The boat burned for about 45 minutes before is sank in waters 120 feet deep, the Coast Guard said.
