Son charged in father's death in Rocky Mount

A man was charged in his father's death after the body was found in a field outside a Rocky Mount home on Saturday, according to the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A man was charged in his father's death after the body was found in a field outside a Rocky Mount home on Saturday, according to the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

On Saturday around 8 p.m., officials responded to a home in the 7200 block of Summerlea Place in Rocky Mount.

When authorities arrived, they found the body of 51-year old William Marcelus Major in a field outside the home. There were some people inside the house, investigators at the scene said.

Major was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a statement from the sheriff's office, the victim's son, 22-year-old William Marcellus Major Jr., is a suspect. Major Jr. was transported to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and charged with one count of first-degree murder.

The shooting was originally thought to be accidental but later classified as a deliberate killing, officials said.

Major Jr. was being held in the Nash County detention center on Sunday with no bond.
