CLAYTON, N.C. — A Clayton Wal-Mart was evacuated for about 30 minutes Friday night after a suspected fire in the store's deli area, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the store, at 805 Town Centre Blvd., shortly after 8:30. There was no fire, however, officials said.

The fire department concluded that a nearby controlled burn caused the smoke and that the exhaust fans on the roof were pulling the smoke and odor into the building.

Firefighters were still trying to pinpoint the controlled burn Friday evening.
