CLAYTON, N.C. — A four-block area of downtown Clayton was closed to traffic overnight Wednesday because of a gas leak.

Town officials said a utility crew accidentally cut an underground 2-inch gas main shortly before 5 p.m.

Parts of Second, Main, Front and Fayetteville streets were closed until nearly 3:30 a.m. Thursday while crews made repairs. Because the leak was underground, crews had to dig several large holes in the road to fix the problem.

There were no evacuations, because businesses in the area were closed for the day when the leak happened.
