Clayton police say man in crash vehicle was stabbed, died of his wounds

Investigators said Dustin Haywood Rogister of High Chaparral Drive in Clayton was found dead in the vehicle. He would have turned 23 on Saturday. Police said it appears he died of a single stab wound to the chest.

An official autopsy report was being conducted but results have not returned yet.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Cameron Way and Shotwell Road and knocked out power to part of the area. Town of Clayton officials said the crash happened after the vehicle turned off US 70 Business. It knocked down power lines onto the vehicle, prompting Duke Energy officials to assist.

Duke Energy quickly shut off the power so Clayton Fire and emergency responders could help the man out. When it was determined the man had injuries not consistent with the accident, homicide detectives from Clayton Police were called in.

Detectives believe the victim knew the suspect but it was unclear what led up to the stabbing. Shotwell Road was shut down from Main Street to US 70 Business during the investigation and to have power restored.
