Clayton Middle School evacuated due to gas smell for 2nd time in a week

Clayton Middle School was briefly evacuated on Monday due to the smell of gas.

CLAYTON, N.C. — Clayton Middle School was briefly evacuated on Monday due to the smell of gas.

According to the Clayton Fire Department, Piedmont Natural Gas evaluated the school before 8 a.m. and determined no threat. Students were back in the building by 8:15 a.m.

It was the second time a gas smell evacuated the school in less than a week.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, someone reported a smell of gas outside the gymnasium and cafeteria.

Firefighters used monitoring devices but could not find any threat.

Officials encourage anyone who smells gas to call 911 immediately.
