RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. State Fair has its share of thrills and chills, but the rides have nothing on what Country Folks Creamery is serving up near Kiddieland.

This Clayton-based ice cream shop serves up homemade ice cream in a big log cabin outside of Gate 1. While Butter Pecan and their new Krispy Kreme flavors are fan-favorites so far, we were shocked to learn that they are boasting "the hottest ice cream in the world."

The Carolina Reaper is a chocolate ice cream featuring North Carolina-grown Reaper peppers. The ice cream itself has such a high level of heat (2.4 million SHU levels) that owner Dwight Arnold believes it is the hottest ice cream in the world.

I tried it and it is pretty spicy!! The heat slowly builds and then your mouth is completely on fire. (I'm not sure how it compares to Cold Sweat or Exit Wound, the spicy flavors offered by Sunni Skys ice cream in Angier.)

The flavor debuted at the fair this year and so far only two people have been able to eat an entire scoop. If you want to give it a try, you must be 18 years and older and sign a waiver.

Their other new flavor - Krispy Kreme ice cream features a vanilla base and every four gallons made contain a dozen doughnuts. A half dozen is used when the ice cream is being made and the rest is crumbled and stirred in at the end, so you get little chunks of it. The flavor is delicious and not too sugary.
