Clayton girl's letter to police helps make road outside Powhatan Elementary safer

A third grader in Clayton decided to take action when traffic made her feel unsafe on her walk to school.

Aubrey Clark, 8, said cars on Vinson Road, outside of Powhatan Elementary School, don’t always stop to allow students to cross the street.

Clark wrote a letter to the Clayton Police Department, saying in part, “Could you please send a crossing guard to my school? There’s a lot of traffic speeding and people don’t stop.”

She even included a diagram with the letter, saying she wants cars to stop for kids in the crosswalk.

“I want them at least to just have a crossing guard for at least 10 minutes every day, because when people start crossing the road, the cars just go blazing through and they never stop,” Clark said.

Police Chief Blair Myhand said that, when available, he will have officers at Powhatan Elementary School in the morning and afternoon to help control traffic when students are crossing.
