Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast on Carolina Ballet's schedule
The ballet includes some favorites for the princess-loving kids out there.
Posted — UpdatedThe ballet's family series will include "Cinderella" in November; the world premiere of a ballet version of "The Little Mermaid" in March; and "Beauty and the Beast" in May. All performances are at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh.
Here are more details:
- The company will perform "Cinderella" from Nov. 23 to Nov. 27, which is Thanksgiving weekend. The family-friendly one-hour ballet will include live music and opens a program that includes another piece set to the music of Igor Stravinsky's Concerto for Two Solo Pianos.
- "The Little Mermaid" will run from March 15 to April 1. It will be a world premiere for the work based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale and created by Tony Award nominee Lynne Taylor-Borbett, who is the company's principal guest choreographer. Best for kids ages 4 and up. The music is by Michael Moricz, who composed the score for The Ugly Duckling (which was a lot of fun to watch this past season).
- And "Beauty and the Beast" is scheduled for May 17 to May 20. It will open a program that also includes a new Robert Weiss ballet set to Beethoven's Symphony No. 9's "Ode to Joy." Weiss is the ballet's artistic director.
And, of course, The Nutcracker will be back, but in a bit different form this year. It will include Las Vegas style magic, along with some other changes. There's been considerable wear and tear on the sets and costumes after the last decade of performances.
