CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The parties at the annual CIAA basketball tournament are legendary. While the games, the entertainment and the possibility of a celebrity sighting draw thousands, for current college students, the week is also an opportunity to entertain thoughts about their future.

Alicia Ortiz was among those showcasing her skills Friday, not on the basketball court, but at the CIAA Career Expo.

The Fayetteville State University senior and psychology major is proactively taking steps toward adulthood.

"For my last year, I lived off campus, paying my own bills and having to schedule everything," she said.

Shaw University freshman Brandon Langley has his eye on a career in the banking industry. He, too, was making the rounds at the career expo.

The CIAA Tournament is much more than basketball.

"I knew in the future I would need an internship, so I walked around each table and just grabbed information about different jobs," Langley said.

Dante Lowe-Rogers, a junior from Shaw, praised the networking opportunities.

"I met with a lot of people, got my resume out, and let them know I'm interested in summer internship opportunities," he said.

Shaw senior Briona May has mastered the art of CIAA networking.

"It's very important, because you never know what person can take you to the next level. It could just be one person that could make you the President of the United States, you never know," she said.
