CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A Chinese New Year festival in Chapel Hill has been postponed over concerns about the spreading coronavirus.

The LightUp Festival was scheduled to take place on Franklin Street on Feb. 2, but organizers postponed because of the spreading virus.

Five people in the United States have been diagnosed with the new virus. They were diagnosed in California, Arizona, Illinois, and Washington state.

More than 2,000 people in China have become ill.

Every year the LightUp Festival literally lights up the town of Chapel Hill with lanterns and live performances.

Organizers are taking precautions because the festival is a large public gathering with people who make have been traveling to China or from China.

While some people are understanding of organizers’ rescheduling the festival, others say they are overreacting to fears of coronavirus.

“I don’t think that anyone who’s sick could come,” Candy Tennant said. “I think maybe it’s a little bit of an overreaction, but safety first?”

Organizers have not released a new date for the festival.
