Chimney fire closes Washington Duke Inn for a few hours

There was a fire in a chimney stack on the roof of the Washington Duke Inn on Friday morning.

DURHAM, N.C. — A fire in a chimney stack on the roof of the Washington Duke Inn on Friday morning forced the hotel to close for a few hours.

Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke shooting from the five-story hotel. It took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The roof and the space below it were damaged, according to Division Chief Danial Cremeans of the City of Durham Fire Department. There were no injuries reported.

The Washington Duke Inn was closed until about 3 p.m. during cleanup and as the cause of the fire was investigated.
