What started out as a completely normal family dinner in early May soon turned into a test of skill and bravery for one Nash County student.

17 year old Mariah Poland is juggling a lot on her plate. She has a job, goes to church, takes college classes and is celebrating a huge milestone. Yeah, I graduated friday and she has a dream to be a nurse and to help take care of other people. Even the simple things like brushing your teeth and brushing their hair, like a lot of people can't do that. She enrolled in a nursing fundamentals class through her high school southern nash where she learned how to perform CPR and practice bedside manner. But when we started clinic als, I realized that maybe that was what I need to do was like become a nurse and take care of people, but it wasn't at a hospital or in a college classroom where Mariah's skills were put to the test. It was during family dinner right here at chili's, sat down and started eating my cheese burger and then I hear this allowed noise and it literally sounded like someone had through a plate across the restaurant. There's just a girl standing there holding a gun pointed at the lady that was bleeding out on the floor. Police say the shooter was night Ika battle. She has since been charged with first degree murder. Among other charges, A stray bullet hit a teenaged chili's employee. He was able to make it to the back kitchen and once the scene was safe, Mariah knew that's where she needed to go. I couldn't find a first aid kit or anything. So I grabbed some gloves out of the kitchen and I grab some towels. I put the towels on his leg and held a lot of pressure up there for like 10 minutes. I had his belt wrapped around it. The boy was taken to the hospital and has since recovered. Now, the graduating senior is focused on what's next. She's applied for a patient services assistant job at Nash General. Mm hmm. SHE'S IN JAIL THIS MORNING WITHOUT BOND. AND POLICE SAY SHORTLY AFTER 07:00PM THEY RESPONDED TO A SHOOTING AT THE CHILIES ON NORTH WESLEYAN BOULEVARD. THEY FOUND 2 VICTIMS. 38 YEAR-OLD NATASHA BARRY DIED. THE OTHER A 15 YEAR-OLD BOY RECEIVED TREATMENT AT THE HOSPITAL AND WAS RELEASED. POLICE SAY BATTLE FLED THE SCENE AFTER THAT SHOOTING BUT WAS LATER ARRESTED AT HER OWN HOME. POLICE ALSO SAY BATTLE AND BARRY KNEW EACH OTHER. THEY ALSO TELL US THE BOY WAS A RESTAURANT EMPLOYEE AND WAS SHOT INADVERTENTLY THE RESTAURANT WAS PACKED AT THE TIME AND AFTER THE SHOTS RANG OUT, PEOPLE JUST RAN INTO THE KITCHEN, LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO HIDE. >> WELL, THIS IS ALL 3 ARE VERY CONCERNED OVER ROCKY MOUNT POLICE DEPARTMENT AS IT IS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
