FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — The Playhouse Children's Museum in Fuquay-Varina is in danger of having to close its doors.

The business, which opened in December 2019, shared on its Facebook page last week that it was "very close to having to permanently close our doors."

"Lack of attendance due to COVID has brought us to the point where, if we don't dramatically and immediately increase our revenue, we will be closing," the Facebook post says. "This is not what we want. We want to be open to keep providing y'all a place to come play with your kids."

The post continues: "But in order to do that, we need visitors. We hope that with the latest mask updates and the increase in vaccines in the general population that y'all will come back. Again, this is not what we want to have happen. But it is the stark reality of where we are and we want to be honest about that. Please come play. We'd love to have you."

The business is a creation of local parents Rob and Jolene Ehlers, who have five kids.

"When we moved here we realized that the options for indoor play for kids was limited. Raleigh offers some great options, but it also has several obstacles such as traveling, parking, overcrowding, coordinating nap schedules, etc.," the couple shared in a Q&A with Go Ask Mom in January 2020. "We knew that this area has great families eager to find a safe, comfortable indoor space for kids."

The Playhouse stretches across 3,500-square-feet and includes custom-built play houses that are designed to look like a grocery mart, house, service station and other daily destinations. There's also a dedicated section for toddlers, a reading nook and other toys. "Our biggest dream for this museum is simply to provide an enjoyable, comfortable space for families to play and spend time together," they shared.

The Facebook post encouraged parents to make reservations on the Playhouse's website. Walk-ins also are welcome. The business is at 1520 Broad St., Fuquay-Varina.
