We're big fans of illustrator and children's book author Brian Lies and his "Bats at the ... " series in my house.

Lies actually lives in the same Massachusetts town where my in-laws live and my mother-in-law is a librarian. Because of the connection, my kids have gotten several of his books as gifts. And my older daughter even has a poster of his "Bats at the Ball Game" book hanging in her room.

So here's hoping we can work out a few moments before her own ball game so we can head over to his visit at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh next Tuesday.

Lies will be there with author I.C. Springman to present their new book, "More," a tale of a mischievous magpie and a helpful mouse. The book is best for ages 4 and up. They'll be there at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday.

Also coming up at Quail Ridge:

As I wrote earlier, Audrey Penn will visit as part of the Bookmarked! 2012 children's reading festival. Penn, who wrote "The Kissing Hand," and other books, is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday. Quail Ridge also is having a special in-store book fair to benefit the Lucy Daniel Center's book club.

And at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, award-winning author Sharon Draper will visit with her paperback "Out of My Mind," which tells the story of Melody, who cannot walk or talk, but with her mind and spirit, refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. For ages 9 and up.
