KINSTON, N.C. — A child visiting Kinston's Lions Adventure water park Monday was taken from there to a hospital after he lost consciousness. The child was a camper from the City of Rocky Mount Williford Summer Day Camp, a city spokeswoman said.

Neither Rocky Mount nor Kinston officials would say what caused the child to need emergency attention. He was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

The waterpark, at 2602 W. Vernon Ave., remained closed Tuesday and the child was in serious condition, a Rocky Mount spokeswoman said.

"The safety of everyone, particularly the kids ... is our No. 1 priority," Kinston Director of Public Safety Bill Johnson said Tuesday. "We are very concerned for each child, and we are in contact with this child's family to offer our support. All of us are praying for his recovery."
