Sanford, N.C. — A 7-year-old was in critical condition at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after nearly drowning at a lake in a gated community near Sanford, authorities said Tuesday.
The near drowning happened Saturday in the Carolina Lakes subdivision. The child, who lives in Cameron, was playing in the water when a family member found him unresponsive, authorities said.
Bystanders performed CPR until paramedics arrived, and the child was initially transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville before being transferred to UNC Hospitals.
