Emmy was born at UNC Rex just over one year ago. Before going home with her parents and big brother, the family was given startling news.

About 10 minutes after she was born the nurses were doing the physical exam and just noticed some strange bumps on her body. Um they were a little perplexed. And so we had you know more tests throughout the next couple of weeks upon being discharged. And at around two weeks old Emmy was diagnosed with an extremely rare disease called infantile mild fiber mitosis. Which is really um a disease in which benign tumors form throughout her body. Never want anything to be wrong with your baby. But you know we really missed out on that mushy gushy infant phase because you know we found it was great. We found out something was wrong right away because it truly saved her life. But at the same time it was you know we were discharged from the hospital with these questions of what was going on And was she gonna make it? Just remember one day clearly I just kept saying I wish I knew what was gonna happen like I wish I knew what the future held and Dan said No one knows. We were really fortunate in that the approach that our oncologist recommended first um worked and worked well and she responded well to it. Um But I think the whole uncertainty aspect of everything was what was most difficult initially and at various points throughout the year what made the difference in our year was being as present as possible despite not knowing what the future held because we did not want to miss out on anything. I just want to reiterate our thank you's to the U. N. C. Entire team who have completely saved our daughter's life and have kept us motivated and educated and um uh I stared to say happy along the way.

first of all, I love the cover and that was based on a comment that I made that I should use my head for a billboard and it became the color the cover of the book, jerry Davis was diagnosed with cancer last september. It was kind of a surreal experience for me and I was having sort of a hard time coping. I didn't want to be sad because I didn't really know what the outcome was going to be. She started seeing humor in things all around her, like when all her hair fell out. But I had one eyelash and I thought, okay Mascara, let's go. And you know, it was just one of those moments where it's like I had to make myself laugh because um, that was how I got through. Her doctor introduced her to Angela McCrumb who heads up Northwestern's Living Well Cancer Resource Center in suburban Geneva. She immediately jumped on board saying humor is healing no matter if you're a patient or caregiver or a nurse at the hospital, there's something that's relatable in the book that you, that will make somebody smile april. Sydell is one of the living well participants who is being treated at another hospital. These are really good. It's her first time seeing the coloring book. I thought that was a really good take on how crazy it is that in this day and age you still have all these kind of horrendous side effects. The art teacher plans on using it in some of her classes. Here is an inspiration for so many people. It's really awesome. Thank you for doing this for all of us. That is great.
