Raleigh recently unveiled a new habitant of Nash Square — Berkeley the Squirrel.

Artist Corey Lancaster created Berkeley from a 90-foot oak tree that was removed from the park in 2019. The tree was nicknamed the Berkeley Oak and was thought to be about 120 years old.

At 85 inches, it was considered the widest tree in downtown Raleigh and was known for how its roots came over the sidewalk on Martin Street, across the street from The Berkeley Cafe, according to a press release.
Berkeley is just a temporary visitor to Nash Square, at 200 S. McDowell St. So make plans to check him out and then head down to nearby Videri Chocolate Factory for some soft serve ice cream.
