PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County court offices will begin moving into the county's new Justice Center this week, which officials said will likely affect public services.

Court filings and payments will be accepted and processed behind the current district courtroom in the Courthouse Annex Building on Dec. 13-14, but access to Clerk of Superior Court’s records will be limited on those two days, officials said.

Existing phone numbers should work or will redirect callers to the new phone numbers. The phone number for the Clerk of Superior Court, 919-545-3500, will not change.

Most of the move should be completed and operations back to normal by next Monday, officials said.

Court sessions won't begin at the Justice Center until Jan. 2. December sessions of civil district court, small claims court and child support court will be in the Courthouse Annex, while criminal cases in Superior Court will be handled in the courtroom at 158 West St.

The $21.1 million Justice Center, at 40 E. Chatham St., has been under construction since May 2011. The facility was in the planning stages before a March 2010 fire destroyed the historic county courthouse.
