SILER CITY — A Chatham County 17-year-old died in a hospital early Monday after being shot in the head Saturday, according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies found Jose Abelardo Rivas lying in the driveway of a vacant home at 872 Bish Road in Siler City around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators believe the teen was at the home alone when he was shot.

Allen Wiggins, who lives on Bish Road, came home Saturday to find deputies at the house, which he said had been for sale for at least a year.

"I (saw) that they had a tow truck that was loading up a white Explorer or Expedition," Wiggins said Sunday. "The windows were busted out."

Authorities said the SUV belonged to Rivas. It's unclear how many people were involved in the shooting or why it happened, investigators said.

Rivas was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was put on life support. He died at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chatham County Sheriff's Office at 919-542-2911.
