SILER CITY, N.C. — An assistant teacher and bus driver at Silk Hope School in Siler City was arrested Thursday after Chatham County deputies said they found a loaded gun in her possession.

Elizabeth Truitt, 49, of 247 Baltimore Road in Advance, is charged with felonious possession of a weapon on school property, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

School officials received consent to search her property and found a loaded Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver in her possession, deputies said. During the investigation, deputies searched a trash can and located one ounce of marijuana and several assorted items of paraphernalia that a witness said Truitt was attempting to hide from officials.

The school was temporarily put on lockdown status as a precaution.

Truitt was released under a $10,000 bond Thursday afternoon. She is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on April 12.
