PITTSBORO, N.C. — Detectives returned $10,000 to a Chatham County resident after the person fell prey to a phone scam, officials said.

The scammer convinced the victim that she had won multiple prizes but first needed to pay taxes and fees on the winnings, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office. Detective Mike Copeland, a financial crimes investigator, was able to recover the $10,000 cash and return it to the victim, who was not identified.

"Scammers want citizens to act urgently, without thinking," Copeland said in a statement. "Never send cash or give out financial information at the request of a stranger on the phone."

Copeland said it is important to report possible scams to authorities as soon as possible and to not feel ashamed or embarrassed.
