CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A family is searching for answers as police work to learn what caused a mother of two to kill her kids and herself in their Charlotte home.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded on Saturday night to a home on Sebastiani Drive around 6 p.m. At the scene, they found two children suffering from life-threatening injuries. Nearly an hour later, officers discovered the kids' mother near a highway bridge where she had jumped to her death.

"We're very saddened for the family and for the friends," said Major Mike Smathers. "We're also concerned for the officers who had to interact and deal with that tonight."

According to neighbors and even police officers, nothing indicated that something to terrible would have happened to this family.

The children included a 7-year-old boy and his little sister, who had just turned three. Officials said the children were transported to a local hospital, where they died.

The incident is under investigation, and officers are speaking to relatives and neighbors of the family to learn more about the mom's motive.

"But that's going to be a key component of the investigation, and we're no where near ready to speak on that," said Major Smathers.
