CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A domestic dispute turned deadly Sunday morning after a man was shot and killed by a police officer in Charlotte.

A woman was shot and a police officer was stabbed Sunday before a man was fatally shot.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) sent out an alert Sunday morning that said there was an officer-involved shooting in the 300 block of West Tremont Avenue in the Central Division.

CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings spoke Sunday morning at the intersection of South Tyron Street and West Tremont Avenue, and the department posted the video on X (formerly Twitter).

Shortly before 8 a.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance call. Jennings said when officers arrived on scene, they heard shots being fired from inside the residence.

Officers forcibly entered the residence and attempted to take a man into custody. An altercation ensued, during which the suspect stabbed an officer in the neck. Jennings said the man grabbed a knife and cut the officer.

Another officer then shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

"This is an unfortunate situation," Jennings said. "As we always talk about, domestic violence calls for service are always some of the most dangerous [situations] that officers can encounter."

Jennings said the officer shot the suspect because he "perceived an imminent and deadly threat."

"Officers did their job today, and they did what they had to do," he said. "But we never want to discount the fact that a life was taken today."

The officer who was stabbed and the woman who was shot were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will be the lead investigative agency in this incident. As is standard procedure, the officer who shot and killed the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a parallel investigation by the CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
