Chapel Hill unveils new StoryWalks

Just in time for summer break, Chapel Hill is unveiling three StoryWalks at its greenways.

StoryWalks have taken off across the Triangle, but primarily in Wake County, during the pandemic. They feature the laminated pages of a picture book, which are posted along a walkway or trail. It's a great activity for toddlers and preschoolers, who will enjoy walking from page to page as their adults read the book. It's also fun for new readers.

Chapel Hill's StoryWalks ca be found in Homestead Park, Pritchard Park and the Tanyard Branch Trail at Umstead Park.

Each installation will feature a different culturally diverse, nature-themed picture book, according to a press release. They will be updated with new titles throughout the year.

“We are thrilled to launch these StoryWalks in the community, especially as we come out of a global pandemic,” said Chapel Hill Library Director Susan Brown in the release. “We hope that families will enjoy this chance to walk, read, and learn together.”

Chapel Hill's StoryWalks are designed to serve a broad swath of families, including those who speak other languages.

“Some of the books you’ll see on these StoryWalks are written in world languages like Spanish, Mandarin, and Burmese. We hope that community members will see these books as both mirrors and windows to the world of all readers we have in Chapel Hill," said Karin Michel, project manager and library manager of youth and family experiences.
