Chapel Hill, N.C. — Chapel Hill Police are investigating a series of thefts of air conditioning units.
Police say the units are sought for the valuable metals they contain. Copper and aluminum command high prices when sold for scrap. In some instances, the metals are removed and the rest of the unit is left behind.
Residents are urged to call 911 to report any suspicious activity behind buildings, at construction sites, or on roofs where air conditioning units may be installed.
Calls to Crime Stoppers, 919-942-7515, to report metal thefts are confidential and anonymous. Calls that lead to an arrest are eligible for a reward up to $1,200.
