CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Like many people, 7-year-old Ray Sanchez had to drop his plans due to the coronavirus pandemic. But for the Chapel Hill second-grader, that meant not being able to go on play dates with his friends anymore.

"I don't want to get sick and I don't want other people to get sick and die," said Sanchez.

So, when picture day came around at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School in Chapel Hill, it wasn't a surprise that Ray kept his mask on.

Like many people, 7-year-old Ray Sanchez had to drop his plans due to the coronavirus pandemic. But for the Chapel Hill second grader, that meant not being able to go on play dates with his friends anymore.

"My first question to him was 'Ray, how did you smile for the camera?'And he said 'how are they gonna see my smile?' and I'm like, 'you didn't take it off?' his mom, Juanita Chavez, said. "I said 'you can take it off for at least three seconds', and he was like 'nope!'"

Chavez said that, when she saw the picture, she laughed so hard.

Ray was also well-pleased with the picture.

"He was like so excited to show 'em to me. Look mom! You're gonna buy them right?" his mother said. "I'm like, I should buy them because this is history. It's an important time of everybody's lives."

7-year-old Ray Sanchez at Chuck E. Cheese's. He always wears his mask, his mom said.

The family decided to purchase his school picture, as a reminder of Ray's big heart, even though they couldn't see his face.

"That he felt like it was really important for other kids to follow what he's doing. He wants to set an example," said Chavez.

An example set, from a little boy who can see the big picture.
