— Charges are pending in a Chatham County crash that killed a Chapel Hill mother and daughter this week, authorities said.

Heather Rice, 43, and Abigail Rice, 12, were northbound on U.S. Highway 15/501 on Monday afternoon when their car was hit head-on by a tractor-trailer south of Pittsboro, authorities said.

The brakes on the southbound rig locked up, and the truck sideswiped two other northbound vehicles that were stopped on the highway waiting for one to turn into a driveway before hitting the Rices' car, authorities said.

Abby Rice was a student at Culbreth Middle School.

"Please know this is the most difficult issue a school will face, but we will lock arms and help one another," Culbreth Middle Principal Monica Bintz wrote in a message to school staff and students' parents.

The State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help the Rice family.
