Chapel Hill man, Greensboro college student dies in accident at summer job
Greensboro College announced the death of a rising senior, Matthew Russell Ellis, 21, of Chapel Hill, in an accident Monday at his summer job.
Posted — UpdatedAccording to the North Carolina Department of Labor, Ellis worked for Bland Landscaping Co. in Raleigh and was injured when he was caught between a truck and a trailer. Ellis was taken to UNC Hospitals, but he died during surgery, Dolores Quesenberry, a department of labor spokeswoman said.
Ellis was a theater/acting major.
"Matt was a joy to work with," Jo Hall, associate professor of theater said in a statement.
"He was always positive and very supportive of his fellow students. His trademark was his deep, resonant voice, so easily recognized by all, and he took pride in being the voice of the 'Tonin'' (dance/theatre) series. His enthusiasm and contagious smile will be sorely missed."
Josh Casper, Ellis' roommate, said the 21-year-old had a positive impact on his life.
"He was my first roommate, my first friend. One of the most gifted actors I've worked with in my undergrad years so far," he said.
According to his obituary, Ellis was a graduate of The Hawbridge School in Saxapahaw.
