Chapel Hill hotel evacuated after mulch fire

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Emergency crews evacuated The Carolina Inn, 211 Pittsboro St., Saturday morning after smoke was reported in the lobby around 9:15 a.m.

A mulch fire outside the building sent smoke billowing through the hotel's HVAC system and into the lobby, according to Chapel Hill Battalion Chief Cabe.

Crews put out the fire, and no damage or injuries were reported. Hotel guests and staff were allowed back in around 10 a.m. The cause of the fire was unknown. No other details were released.
