Whitby Alexander recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement available in Scouts BSA (formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America). She is believed to be the first girl in Chapel Hill to earn the prestigious honor, because girls have only been able to join BSA troops since 2019.

"I jumped into the program as soon as it was available to me," she said. "My brothers had been in the program a couple years prior, so I kind of had an idea of what I was getting into."

She hopes to inspire others and show what women are capable of.

"I know women can absolutely excel in something like this, and now that we’ve had the chance, I do think the program will be, maybe not better off, but we’ll see lots of new, cool and innovative and creative additions to the program," she said. "Women are capable of so many things."

Alexander said her scoutmaster was really welcoming, and she’s grateful for that.

"I think there might have been a little drama with the boys kind of acclimating to having girls in their space, but besides that, it was a really smooth transition into the program," she said.

For her Eagle Scout project, Alexander built a 12 x 10 greenhouse at a local community garden, so that the garden and volunteers can grow food year-round.

The high school senior will be honored at an Eagle Scout ceremony in February. She plans to go into the military after graduation.

Before joining Scouts BSA, Alexander was a Girl Scout for two years.
