CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board of Education selected Dr. Jim Causby to serve as interim superintendent. The decision was made during the board's meeting Thursday night.

Causby recently served as interim superintendent for Johnston County Public Schools, serving in the role from September 2019 until January of 2020. He replaced former Superintendent Ross Renfrow, who abruptly retired. Causby blamed infighting as one of the reasons for leaving the job in Johnston County.

He previously served as superintendent for Chapel Hill-Carrboro from August 2016 to March 2017. He will take office July 1 and will serve the role until a new permanent superintendent is elected by the school board.

He replaces Pam Baldwin, who had been with the school system since April 2017. She resigned in April, effective June 30.

“It is clear that Dr. Causby is genuinely dedicated to strengthening the relationships he established during his previous tenure, meaningfully engaging with all of our diverse stakeholders, and leading the district forward with a focus on equity, and the health and safety of all students and staff,” said board chair Mary Ann Wolf.

Causby spent 26 years as a superintendent of Swain County Schools, Polk County Schools and Johnston County Schools. He has also served as interim superintendent for Hickory City Schools, Madison County Schools, and Johnston County Public Schools, as well as CHCCS.

Causby began his career as a teacher and coach before serving as an assistant principal, principal, and ultimately superintendent.
