Can't rule it out, but less chance of storms for Triangle on Saturday
Thunderstorms began firing up again Friday afternoon over western North Carolina and the Triad, and those storms could make for a rocky Friday night for some communities across the southern half of the state, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.
Posted — UpdatedAfter an active day Thursday, Friday's storms didn't really materialize except in some parts west of us. Stanly County had a severe storm warning around 6 p.m. but for the Triangle and southern half of the viewing area, only some spotty showers showed up here and there.
"We're watching a cold front that stalled just to our north and west that will slowly sink into the area for the day Saturday," Maze said. "That should be the catalyst for some showers and storms. Where it lies (Saturday) will dictate who sees the showers and storms.
"That's going to be the wild card in the forecast (Saturday)."
Maze said there's a chance for an isolated shower overnight but no severe weather is expected. It'll be sunny Saturday morning and temperatures will rise quickly as it turns hot and humid. Temps should hover around 92 but it'll feel hotter than that in some spot.
"If we do have storms, the lion's share will be to the south," Maze said. "But we can't rule out showers around 6-7 in the Triangle. It will die down as we get to the evening and the atmosphere cools."
Sunday is expected to be even hotter with temps around 96. The work week will be a warm one, too, before the remains of tropical system Barry could come into the area with some rain and slightly cooler temps by next Thursday and Friday.
