Chain reaction: SUV swerved into biker leading pack; 7 injured in collision on US 70

The collision between an SUV changing lanes and the lead rider in a pack of motorcycles set off a chain reaction that left seven people injured and closed U.S. Highway 70 in Johnston County on Saturday night.

PINE LEVEL, N.C. — The collision between an SUV changing lanes and the lead rider in a pack of motorcycles set off a chain reaction that left seven people injured and closed U.S. Highway 70 in Johnston County on Saturday night.

A group of riders from the Goldsboro motorcycle club known as "Twisted Kings" were riding together towards Raleigh around 10 p.m., when a Ford Explorer merged into their lane, according to the State Highway Patrol. The SUV hit the lead bike, and others piled up behind.

Five vehicles were involved in the crash. Five people were were taken to WakeMed in Raleigh and Cary. Two of them had injuries that troopers described as serious.

The road was closed for several hours after the crash.

The driver of the Explorer left the scene and law enforcement officers were still looking for that person and vehicle on Monday.
