Out of concern for the health and safety of Fellowship students and staff, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship. We hope to resume the program in 2022. The application period for the 2022 Fellowship will open in the fall of 2021.  
 Here is some advice from our Fellowship alumni for students embarking on their job searches in television news.


Hey there. I'm Kendra Douglas, and I am a sports anchor and reporter in Orlando, Florida I was a fellow back in 2016 I believe, and I loved every single bit of it. So my advice that I would give reporters who are looking to get into the business Don't let your current situation or your current job or the job you hope to get dictate your future. Um, that affects me personally. So I, um, went into news first, knowing that I wanted to be in sports knowing that my passion is in sports. I went into news first, and it was the best kind of, um, ground for me to start on because it helped me become a better storyteller. And I think it helped me overall. Just work on time management a little bit more and just become a better journalist. So don't let your where your situation is right now dictate where you're gonna be. Also, a big thing, I would say, is fine mentors who are going to be mean and give it to you straight up. Just do that. I'm fortunate enough that in the position that I'm in, we have people who come in to talk to us and mentor us and talk about our voices and how we can do better. But when I was starting out, I would go to so many people who I asked, mentor me and just ask them for their advice and say, like, What do you think I should do? Look at my really How do you think I should tell the story? Don't be afraid to ask people to be your mentor because you never know what's gonna happen. I've had a lot. Just help me out. Along the way, I've had a lot just be references for me. So that's a big one, too. And I think another one would be Don't let no be the final answer for you. Don't It just means not right now. And I think that that's something that everyone needs to remember is, um, Toe. Always keep pushing to always know that there is going to be a door that's going to be open for you, and when you have it, take advantage of everything. Take advantage of that moment, make sure you take advantage of that job and to really just hone into your skills to be the best if you could be. So hopefully those are some good advice and takeaways that will help you out in your future. I love this fellowship. It helped me be the best that I could be. And I hope that future journalists are able to be the best that they could be. Thanks, guys. Hello, everyone. I'm Erin Thomas. I'm a reporter. WRL News in Raleigh, North Carolina. It's also a diversity fellow back in 2015 cannot believe how much time has flown by. But I could tell you that I've learned so much diversity fellowship that brought me where I am today in my career. Some advice I'd like to share with some aspiring journalists is to be patient. The job hunting process could be very daunting, and it takes time. But I promise you, you will eventually get that. Yes, and it is exciting and just just wait for it. And also, I would say, be willing to go anywhere. When I was in college for jobs, I was eliminating my reach. I didn't want to go any further of more than Maryland. My job a little bit further after Pennsylvania, but I am still a great experience. I learned so much both personally and professionally. And here we are today, five years later made it back home super happy. Wishing all the best on your job search. Hello, everyone. My name is Melissa and I'm a reporter with ABC 20 News in Springfield, Illinois. And first off, I want to say congratulations on getting the fellowship with WRL TV. I'm so terribly sorry that you guys won't be able to participate because of the pandemic. It seems like it's been taking a lot of things away from us, but I do want to share three pieces of advice with all of you. The first one is to do your research. You know, go online and look at potential stations where you see yourself working. You know, obviously, if you don't see yourself working 1000 miles away from home family and friends, um, that might not be the best option for you. So one do your research. The second piece of advice I have for you is Thio and connect with local reporters that actually work at stations where you might see yourself working. Um, a lot of the reporters have social media Twitter Facebook Instagram. So, you know, shooting them a d m. Ah, private message Asking them a few questions about their workflow, how their station works behind the scenes. They'd be more than happy to answer questions. I know. At least I would be on the third piece of advice I have for you is to don't get discouraged. You know, a lot of people might not respond to you right away. Some people might take weeks or even months to get back to you. Some people might not respond at all, but, you know, keep working through that. Um, you know, continue to reach out and communicate with people. And again, don't get discouraged because you will get and you might face a lot of rejection, but don't let rejection to find you. Um, but the last thing I do want to say is again, Congratulations on working very hard. Um, never forget about the people who helped you along your journey. I'll always be thankful for those people. The lastly, you know, if you want to, if you have any questions about reporting or a TV broadcast journalism, I'd be happy to answer any questions. My best piece of advice for someone who's coming into this industry, trying to find a job right now would be to be yourself. Be genuinely who you are, whether it be on your riel, whether it be during interviews, whatever it might be, people can feel authenticity. And this industry in this world needs more people who are telling stories as they would if they're talking to their friends or family. Don't worry about this classic reporter voice, that classic anchor track, whatever it might be, just be yourself. Hi, my name is D Andrea Turner, and I am currently in MJ in Huntsville, Alabama. I just graduated in May, so I was on the job front not too long ago. So for students looking for a job, the first thing that I would say is to make sure that you have a mentor who isn't afraid to be blunt with you, you know, isn't afraid to help and guide you because they truly have your best interests at heart, and they just know things that we don't know about this business. And the second thing that I would say is to look at those reporters and the market that you are applying for jobs for, Look at their reels, see what they did. Because those were the reels that got them hired in that market. And it kind of gives you an idea of what that news director is looking for. And, of course, make sure you have a phenomenal rate. Riel. Um, the last thing that I would say is just basically, embrace the journey. Culvert has turned all of our lives upside down, and we all have an individual journey to journalism, and we're gonna have an individual journey. Thio, get to our first market in our first job. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, we're going to see a nice day for it today as some high thin cloud cover, temperatures will be warm, but our humidity stays on the low side. And that means if you're planning to have lunch outside today, it looks lovely for that temperature in the triangle around 78 degrees, some high thin clouds, but it stays nice and dry and our humidity remains low. So we get the green light for lunch outside today for sure. High temperatures this afternoon definitely warm, much warmer than normal. 86 in Raleigh, 85 in Durham and 90 in Fayetteville hit 89 officially yesterday in Raleigh Durham and in Fayetteville. And that ended up at least at RDU as the hottest day that we've seen so far this year. So it'll be a couple degrees cooler than that today. You can see the thunderstorm icons there. We are likely to have some scattered storms but not until the evening, starting at around eight or nine o'clock this evening. Some scattered storms from the triangle area southward. Our normal high is 73. We're looking at temperatures well above that all the way through Saturday, but it does look like we may have some cooler temperatures by Sunday into Monday. Our pollen counts are very high for trees but not pine pollen. That yellow pine pollen that's so messy has really started to taper off now. But mulberry oak ash and maple are still very high out there. This is a look at our pollen counts. We tend to see the tree pollen really tapering off at the end of April but some grass pollen tends to linger into May. Here's a look at the big picture. We have a cold front that's dropping across our area rain free, but eventually it lifts northward as a warm front and that's when we'll have potential for some scattered storms, we'll pause it there at five o'clock. And as that front lists northward notice around eight or nine o'clock, we have a line of storms that develops. We'll have some heavy rain with this, some blustery conditions and a lot of us will end up seeing that potential for storms. We'll likely have, as I mentioned, some windy conditions but not severe criteria. Likely that's 58 mile per hour winds or stronger. It's not likely to be that strong. We added some rain to the forecast for Wednesday initially looked like it would be mostly cloudy, but the models have really jumped on board with some showers. This is a look at lunchtime. So some rain in our western counties and it's out of here by around four or five o'clock in the afternoon. So a quick shower, but we give it a 30% chance. And Futurecast even shows a tiny shower lingering. Say after dinner time, temperatures, as I mentioned are going to be warm but cooler on Sunday and Monday, we'll see a front that comes through and slides southward during the day's Sunday. Saturday looks like a small chance of a thunderstorm late in the day, but Sunday looks like it could be a bit wetter.

SAVANNAH, HE HAS BEEN VERY CLEAR HE PLANS TO BE OUT ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL AS MUCH AS HE CAN AFTER COURT. COURT'S NOT GOING TO BE IN SESSION ON WEDNESDAY. WHY IS THAT? &gt;&gt; IT'S PROBABLY THE MOST DEFENSIBLE FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. NUMBER ONE, THE ORIGINAL THEORY OF THE CASE IS THAT TRUMP FALSIFIED BUSINESS RECORDS AND ADDITIONALLY BECAUSE HE WAS DOING THAT TO CONCEAL ANOTHER CRIME, IT'S ELEVATED TO A FELONY IN NEW YORK. THE OTHER CRIME IT IS A FEDERAL CAMPAIGN VIOLATION, WHICH REALLY IS AN UNUSUAL PLACE. IT'S A NOVEL THEORY. NST NEVER REALLY BEEN TESTED IN NEW YORK COURTS. FALSIFICATION OF BUSINESS RECORDS HAS BEEN TESTED. A CRIME THAT IS PROSECUTED. THE PROSECUTION MUST PROVE NOT ONLY THAT THE BUSINESS RECORDS WERE FALSIFIED BUT ADDITIONALLY THAT IT WAS IN CONCEALMENT OF A CRIME. THE DEFENSE THERE COULD SIMPLY BE IT WASN'T FOR CAMPAIGN PURPOSES. IT WAS TO REDUCE THE EMBARRASSMENT THAT I WOULD HAVE WITH MELANIA. OR YOU MIGHT SEE A DEFENSE OF I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. THOSE ARE OTHER PEOPLE, MICHAEL COHEN ACTED ON HIS OWN. THAT'S WHY I SUSPECT YOU SEE WITNESSES, HOPE HICKS, PEOPLE AROUND HIM AND MAYBE HEARD HIM TALK ABOUT THINGS. MICHAEL COHEN HAS CREDIBILITY ISSUES. BUT I HAVE TO SAY, THAT'S A CLASSIC THING THAT ALL COOPERATING WITNESSES HAVE. IF HE'S INTRODUCING DOCUMENTS, THE PROSECUTION WILL SAY THE DOCUMENTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. &gt;&gt; MICHAEL COHEN IS THE FORMER LAWYER, THE PERSON WHO EXECUTED THESE PAYMENTS AND LATER WAS REIMBURSED. HE HAS PLEADED GUILTY. AND WHEN YOUCOOPERATING WITNESS LIKE THAT, THEY HAVE CREDIBILITY PROBLEMS. THE PROSECUTORS WILL HAVE TO SHORE HIM UP WITH CORROBORATING EVIDENCE. &gt;&gt; THEY ARE. THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE TO TRY TO USE SOME DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE. THERE'S ONE RECORDING WE KNOW ABOUT. NOT ABOUT STORMY DANIELS, THE PORN STAR INVOLVED IN THESE HUSH MONEY PAYMENTS. THERE'S ANOTHER ONE, THE FORMER PRESIDENT IS ON TAPE DISCUSSING HOW THE REIMBURSEMENT SCHEMES WILL WORK. PROSECUTORS WANT TO BRING IN ALL OF THAT TO FLESH OUT THE STORY. THEY WANT TO SHOW A PATTERN OF SUPPRESSING A BUNCH OF STORIES LEADING UP TO THE ELECTION, ALL IN SERVICE OF TRYING TO KEEP WHAT THEY SAY, PROSECUTORS SAY WAS DAMAGING INFORMATION FROM THE VOTERS.
