Cause of Wednesday crash between Durham school bus, police cruiser released

Officials were on the scene after a Durham County Schools bus and a Durham Police patrol car crashed on Tuesday.

DURHAM, N.C. — Officials were on the scene after a Durham County Schools bus and a Durham Police patrol car crashed on Wednesday.

WRAL's Sky 5 was over the scene of the accident, which happened at Taylor Street and Elm Street around 4:11 p.m. Wednesday. According to school officials, the school bus involved was No. 163, which was transporting 25 students from Burton and RN Harris elementary schools.

From Sky 5, you could see parents stopping to pick up children at the scene of the accident.

Officials told WRAL News the officer in the patrol car had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment as the vehicle's air bags were deployed in the vehicle at the moment of impact.

Thursday evening, Durham police told WRAL's Mark Boyle the officer was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday evening. The officer was responding to assist another officer. Officials said he had his car lights and siren on when the crash happened.

The bus was driving on Elm Street and the patrol car was on Taylor Street. The 2016 Dodge Charger was a total loss and the bus received major damage, officials said.

An official with Durham County Schools said at least five students had bumps and bruises and the driver of the bus reported some shoulder pain. None of them required a trip to the hospital.
