RALEIGH, N.C. — Here's a holiday event that doesn't require you to get up in the wee hours of the morning and frantically refresh your computer ...

Day specific tickets for the fifth annual North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival at Booth Amphitheatre in Cary will go on sale at noon, Friday, Aug. 9. The seven-week event runs Nov. 22 to Jan. 12. Anytime tickets for the event are on sale now. They start at $10.

According to a press release, "Chinese artisans are already hard at work crafting more than 20 all new displays, each one comprised of hundreds of parts, and thousands of LED lights. Organizers are promising a big surprise to reign supreme on Symphony Lake this year and from all the preview renderings it is sure to mesmerize visitors of all ages. These larger than life lanterns promise to captivate visitors with their amazing craftsmanship, cultural significance and artistic beauty. Cultural arts performances will again be featured each night on the main stage."

I love this event for several years: It's peaceful and beautiful. It's pretty amazing to see these works of art. The performances on stage are incredible. And I've never experienced long lines or big crowds when I'm there. It's just a lovely way to spend a couple of hours (especially if it isn't freezing outside). My family has always enjoyed it.

"When we agreed to host the lanterns five years ago we had no idea it would so quickly become engrained in the community”, said Doug McRainey, Town of Cary’s Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, in the release. “We just knew the beauty and strong cultural elements made perfect sense for Booth Amphitheatre and are completely delighted the response continues to grow each year.”

This year's festival will be open 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. It will be closed on Mondays except Dec. 23 and Dec. 30. More information is on Booth Amphitheatre's website.
